My journey into birth began when we had trouble getting pregnant. My desire to learn and study birth "just in case" led me to where I am today. When I was finally able to become pregnant, I decided to birth naturally at home to fully experience the birth of my son. What I found was that the support I received from my two midwives and doula were one of the most important parts of my birth. It left me feeling whole, empowered, and ready to love and care for my children.
After my 6 week check up, I was devastated to be leaving birth behind. I decided that I would train through DONA (Doulas of North America)to become a certified birth doula. It has taken time and dedication to get to this point. I am happy to say that I am a certified doula and provide care consistent with the DONA standards of care. Although I have chosen the path of certification, I do believe it is not the only path and each doula has the ability to decide how she can best serve mothers.
I currently reside in Plano, Texas, a beautiful suburb of Dallas. I am blessed to be the wife of a wonderful and supportive husband, Tom, who each day challenges me to be the woman I am. My three beautiful children, Dunkan age 13, Zachary age 3 and Isabel now age 1, are the ones who keep me physically, emotionally, and intellectually on my toes. I have been blessed to experience the love and emotions of being a mom to an adopted son and to two biological children, neither love of which is stronger. I cherish the moments I have spent watching them grow and discover this beautiful world. I am also mom to an active black lab named Amy. I am devoted to my family, friends and faith in God.
My Birthing Philosophy...
I believe every woman deserves to have the birth she chooses.
I believe every woman deserves to have a supportive birth team, including a doula, who knows how to help her have a successful birth.
I believe that the birthing mom's husband or partner is an intricate part of the birth team and will work diligently to help him participate in the birth at his comfort level.
I believe and support a woman's right to choose her birth location, whether it be home, birthing center or hospital.
I believe that my role as a doula is to first listen. Then my role is to inform and empower the mother. Then to facilitate the mother's wishes for her birth by providing labor support. Lastly to help you enjoy your birth experience and new addition!
Although I am a Christian woman who has chosen natural birth for myself, it in no way diminishes my ability or desire to help women who have different beliefs or desires in life or for birth.
